Prosthetic Eye Service

Losing your eye due to injury or illness can be devastating and damaging to your confidence. Getting fitted with a prosthetic eye, also known as “fake eyes”, “artificial eyes”, or “glass eye”, helps you regain confidence and move on with daily activities. Plus, it also creates balance in your facial appearance and improves the comfort of your affected eye socket.

Prosthetic eyes are available in various options, including ready-made and customised options. A custom prosthetic eye, which will be created by our ocularist, will have a better fit and a more natural colouring to match the other eye.

Creating a prosthetic eye is a very meticulous process involving a myriad of details. The damaged eyeball will be removed and replaced with an implant. After the eye socket has healed, you can visit our ocularist to be fitted with your prosthetic eye. Our ocularist will discuss the available types of implants with you before recommending the best option. Generally, a prosthetic eye can last for years or even decades with proper cleaning and care. Professional polishing to effectively remove surface scratches will be advised by the ocularist.

FAQ

1. What is the difference between a ready-made and a custom prosthetic eye?

Ready-made prosthetic eyes are prefabricated and may not fit precisely. In contrast, custom eyes are crafted by our experienced ocularist to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural eye, offering greater comfort, a more natural appearance, and better long-term wearability.

2. Can people see with a prosthetic eye or “fake” eye?

While fake eyes greatly improve cosmetic appearance and self-esteem, they do not restore vision. Current prostheses cannot transmit visual information to the brain as they are not connected to the optic nerve.

3. Can you blink with a prosthetic eye?

Yes, you can blink with a prosthetic eye. Although commonly referred to as “glass eyes,” modern artificial eyes are made from acrylic. A custom-made prosthetic eye ensures a proper fit in the eye socket, allowing you to blink naturally and enabling natural movement of the prosthetic eye.

4. What is the process of getting a prosthetic or artificial eye?

On the first day, you’ll meet with an ocularist to take an impression of your eye socket and create a custom shape. On the second day, we will match the prosthesis’s colour to your natural eye. On the third day, the prosthetic eye will be inserted and assessed for comfort and movement. Adjustments will be made as needed until the fit is just right.
